Lithophanes: What They Are and How to Choose the Right Photo
How 3D-printed lithophanes work, which photos turn out best, sizes and prices in Singapore, and how to light and display one.

A lithophane looks like a blank white panel until you hold it up to a light. Then a photograph appears in soft, glowing detail. It's one of the most striking things you can make on a 3D printer, and it makes a great personal gift for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or in memory of someone. This guide explains how lithophanes work, which photos turn out best, and how to choose a size.
What Is a Lithophane?
Lithophanes date back to 19th-century Europe, when they were carved into thin porcelain. The idea is simple: the panel is thin where the image is bright and thick where it is dark. With light behind it, thin areas let lots of light through and thick areas block it, so the panel's changing thickness becomes a greyscale picture.
A 3D printer is well suited to this because it can build that thickness in fine layers. We print our lithophanes in white PLA, which spreads light evenly and gives the cleanest range of tones.
What Makes a Great Lithophane Photo
A photo that looks great on your phone doesn't always make a great lithophane. The panel reproduces brightness only, not colour, so a few things matter:
- Strong contrast. Clear lights and darks translate well. Photos that are flat, hazy or all mid-tone come out muddy.
- A clear subject. Faces, people and pets that fill most of the frame work best. A person standing small in front of a large landscape becomes a tiny, indistinct figure.
- A simple background. Busy backgrounds such as crowds, foliage or patterned walls compete with the subject. A plain sky, wall or blurred background keeps attention where it belongs.
- Good lighting on faces. Faces lit from the front or side keep their features. Harsh shadows or backlit silhouettes lose detail.
- Enough resolution. A normal phone photo is plenty. Avoid screenshots of screenshots and heavily compressed images from chat apps, because compression artefacts get printed too.
Quick check before you upload
Convert your photo to black and white on your phone. If it still reads clearly (you can recognise the faces and the subject stands out), it will make a good lithophane. If it turns into a grey blur, try another shot or crop tighter.
Photos That Work Well
| Works well | Harder to get right |
|---|---|
| Close-up portraits and couples | Large group photos with small faces |
| Pets, especially light fur against a dark background (or vice versa) | Black pets on dark sofas |
| Wedding and graduation portraits | Night shots and dim indoor photos |
| Babies and newborn photos | Wide scenic landscapes |
| Landmarks with a clear silhouette | Photos with text you need to read |
Choosing a Size and Orientation
Match the orientation to your photo so nothing important gets cropped. Our custom lithophanes come in these sizes:
| Photo shape | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 203 × 152 mm | $60 |
| Landscape | 152 × 102 mm | $50 |
| Portrait | 152 × 203 mm | $60 |
| Portrait | 102 × 152 mm | $50 |
| Square | 152 × 152 mm | $50 |
Prices are in SGD. The larger sizes show more detail, which helps with photos of two or more people. The smaller ones suit a single face or a pet and fit nicely on a desk or bedside table. You can also pick a frame colour.
How to Display a Lithophane
A lithophane needs light behind it to show the image. Any of these works:
- A window. Daylight gives the most natural look and needs nothing extra.
- A small LED light or strip behind the panel. Warm white gives a classic, cosy glow; cool white looks crisper.
- A lamp or phone torch, to show it off to someone quickly.
Avoid direct, hot light sources such as old incandescent bulbs pressed against the panel. PLA softens at around 60 °C. LEDs run cool and are the safe choice.
How Ordering Works
- Upload your photo on the lithophane page.
- Check the live preview. It shows how the image will look when backlit.
- Pick a size and frame colour, then add it to your cart.
- We convert the photo into a 3D model and print it in white PLA.
Lithophanes are made to order. If you need one for a specific date such as a wedding, birthday or Christmas, order early. Check our seasonal drops too; we sometimes run festive lithophane designs.
