Polycarbonate is one of the strongest 3D printing materials available, with exceptional heat resistance and natural optical clarity. It is used in demanding engineering applications where high temperature performance and impact strength are critical.
Polycarbonate (PC) is the engineering plastic used in bulletproof glass, eyewear lenses, and aircraft components. As a 3D printing filament it offers the highest strength of anything we print, holds up to ~110 °C, and can produce parts with semi-transparent clarity. We use it for impact-resistant fixtures, transparent enclosures, and parts that PETG or ASA can't handle. Available in clear and black only.
Best uses
- ▸High-stress structural parts
- ▸Transparent covers & lenses
- ▸Electrical enclosures
- ▸Safety and protective equipment
- ▸High-temperature housings
Pros
- ✓ Outstanding impact strength
- ✓ Highest heat resistance (~120 °C)
- ✓ Optical clarity possible
- ✓ Excellent stiffness
- ✓ Good electrical insulation
- ✓ Engineering-grade performance
Cons
- ✗ Requires very high print temps (260-310 °C)
- ✗ Enclosed and heated chamber essential
- ✗ Significant warping tendency
- ✗ Hygroscopic — needs drying
- ✗ Limited colour options
- ✗ Most difficult material to print
Key properties
From our workshop
PC requires high-temperature extrusion (~270 °C) and a heated build chamber — we print every PC job on the X1C with the enclosure sealed and active filtration running. Lead time is 24-48 hours on PC because the chamber pre-heat alone takes an hour, and we batch PC jobs when possible. Cost per gram is the highest of all our materials.
